The back camera on your iPhone records the best quality video, but you can't see yourself while you're filming. So you adjust, guess your framing, hit record, and find out afterwards that you were half out of the shot the whole time. Here's how to fix that using a second iPhone as a live wireless monitor, no cables, no extra gear required.

What you need

Two iPhones with Detail installed on both, and a Wi-Fi network for both phones to connect to. Got an older iPhone sitting in a drawer? That's your monitor.

Step 1: Open Detail on both phones and create a new project

Open Detail on both iPhones and tap New Project on each. Make sure both phones are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, this is how they find each other automatically.

Step 2: Connect the two phones

On both phones, tap the three dots in the corner and tap Connect. Because they're on the same Wi-Fi network, they'll find each other instantly and sync into a split screen showing both cameras at the same time.

Step 3: Set up your camera phone

On the phone you're using to record, flip to the back camera. Mount it on a tripod and point it at wherever you'll be sitting or standing. This is your camera, so make sure you're looking directly at it when you record.

Step 4: Set up your monitor phone

Pick up your second phone. Tap Layout and select Single Frame so you're only seeing one camera on screen. Then tap Source and switch it to your camera phone's feed. Your monitor is now showing you exactly what your back camera sees, in real time.

Step 5: Frame up and hit record

Use your monitor phone to check your framing and adjust until everything looks right. Once you're happy with it, hit record from the monitor phone and set it somewhere you can see it while you film. You can now watch yourself in real time while recording with your back camera, adjust your framing on the fly, check your lighting, and make sure you're in the shot the whole time.

Step 6: Edit on either phone

When you're done, both phones save the footage as their own separate project inside Detail. You can edit directly in the app on whichever phone you prefer, no file transfers, no separate editing apps needed.
