Auto Edit is a tool inside Detail that helps you turn a long recording into finished videos without doing any manual editing. It can generate long-form edits, short clips, and polished versions of your project in just a few steps.
This guide walks you through how Auto Edit works for two types of recordings: talking-head videos and podcasts.
Talking-head videos
Talking-head videos are recordings where only one person appears on screen.
Step 1: Open your project - If you recorded the video in Detail, the project will already appear in your library. If the video is saved on your device, tap the plus button, choose Import, and select your file.
Step 2: Open Auto Edit - Inside your project, tap Auto Edit and choose Talking head.
Step 3: Adjust your options - You can toggle options on or off, including:
Zoom cuts
Titles for short clips
Captions
Background music
If you plan to add your own music later, turn the background music option off.
Once the settings look right, tap Continue. Auto Edit will analyze the audio, clean up pauses, and prepare your edits.
Step 4: Review your edits - You’ll receive a set of long-form edits as well as short clips grouped by topic. Short clips are vertical by default but you can change the aspect ratio at any time by tapping Aspect.
All generated videos remain editable. You can trim, adjust captions, change transitions, or make layout changes before exporting.
When a clip is ready, tap Export and save it to your device.
Podcasts
Podcasts often involve multiple speakers. Auto Edit can process conversations and create both long-form edits and short clips.
Step 1: Open your podcast recording - Tap Auto Edit and select Podcast.
Step 2: Assign speakers - Auto Edit will play short segments from the conversation. For each voice, choose the person speaking. When all speakers are assigned, tap Let’s go.
Step 3: Review your edits - Auto Edit will generate long-form edits and short clips. Short clips are created in vertical format by default, but you can change this in Aspect. You can still adjust each clip manually. If you recorded with multiple cameras, you can switch layouts by tapping Layout. For example, you can use split screen and adjust framing as needed.
If you want to reuse a layout across all clips, open Presets and save your layout, then tap Apply to all clips.
When everything is ready, export your clips.
Auto Edit is designed to help you turn long recordings into multiple finished videos with very little work. Whether you film a solo update or a multi-speaker podcast, you can use Auto Edit to quickly generate long-form edits and short clips that are ready to share.
