Using an iPad with Detail gives you more screen space and more flexibility when recording, editing, and presenting. In this guide, we’ll walk through the most useful ways to use your iPad alongside your iPhone.
Connect your iPhone and iPad
Open Detail on both your iPhone and iPad. On each device, start a new project.
On your iPhone, tap the three dots in the top right corner and select Connect. This starts the connection between both devices.
Use your iPad as a monitor
Once connected, go to your iPad. In the bottom menu, tap Layout and choose the single layout option.
Next, open Canvas on the left side and select Swap sources. Choose your iPhone’s camera as the source.
Your iPad will now mirror what your iPhone’s camera sees, acting as a live monitor. You can see your framing, layouts, overlays, and even preview live streams in real time.
When you’re ready, tap Record on either device to start filming.
Use your iPad as a second camera
If you’re recording with two angles, your iPad can also act as a second camera. Follow the same connection steps as before.
Once connected, switch between camera angles using Layout. For example, one angle can show your face while the other shows your setup, guest, or slides.
Edit on a larger screen
Another advantage of using an iPad is editing on a bigger display. With more space, it’s easier to trim clips, move overlays, adjust layouts, and fine-tune your edits.
This is especially helpful for longer videos, podcasts, or presentations.
Draw overlays using your iPad
Your iPad is also great for drawing overlays. Tap Overlay, then Draw. You’ll see tools like pens, markers, highlighters, an eraser, and color pickers.
You can draw directly on your video while recording or during editing. This works well for tutorials where you want to circle or underline key points, highlight parts of a slide or diagram, or add simple sketches to explain ideas visually.
Using an iPad with Detail gives you more control, better visibility, and a smoother workflow when creating videos.
